Abstract

Teacher and lesson plan are two indispensable variables vital to the successful lesson delivery in a classroom setting. The main responsibility expected from a good teacher is to carry out a successful lesson on a daily basis and as such, the outcome expected is a better academic performance on the part of the students. It is a high display of professionalism teaching alongside lesson plan in a classroom environment. To assess the perception of the teacher with regards to the lesson plan on a daily basis, qualitative and quantitative instrument that comprised observation and questionnaire were used to explore information on the study from the teachers. Random sampling technique was used to pick 100 teachers across Northwest geopolitical zone of the country while 40 teachers were purposively observed during the lesson. Furthermore, hypotheses were tested to see the difference in perception between the highly experienced/old teachers and the teachers who were recently employed. Cronbach Alpha which yielded an alpha result of 0.63 and 0.70 was used in validating the instrument. There is significance difference between the old and new teachers in compliance using the lesson plan in class as it is evidently clear that new teachers use lesson plan while teaching. The study concluded that teachers have positive perception to the use of lesson plan in teaching while the observation result shows that teachers were just planning the lesson for the sake of writing but not making use of the lesson plan format in the classroom. Recommendations were given among which are: Regular supervision of the teachers irrespective of the number of years in service, provision of laptop for easy planning of the daily lesson, constant Teachers Development Program to keep teachers up–to-date with the requirements needed to be a professional teacher.
