MITIGATING THE CAUSES OF SECONDARY SCHOOL CHEMISTRY STUDENTS’ APATHY IN PURSUING CHEMISTRY OR CHEMISTRY-RELATED COURSES AT TERTIARY EDUCATION LEVEL IN NIGERIA
Abstract
Shortage of chemistry teachers in Nigeria secondary schools have been attributed to increasing number of secondary school chemistry students losing interest to pursuing chemistry and chemistry-related courses at tertiary level. This article seeks to investigate reasons why secondary school chemistry students do not like to pursue chemistry or chemistry-related courses at tertiary level and roles teachers, parents and government can play to boosting students’ interest and understanding of chemistry at secondary school level as this has significant effect on students’ decision to/not to pursue chemistry at
tertiary level. The study adopted a qualitative research design type.
