Abstract

The Promoting Excellence in Teaching (PET) programme was designed to provide pedagogical training for newly recruited academic staff in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.  It is however facing extinction tendencies at a time when students’ learning outcomes need to be optimised due to competitive work and global challenges within the context of dwindling resources. The continued funding of the programme therefore has to be justified. With this in mind, this study was carried out to: determine the academic and professional relevance of the programme; and examine the challenges facing the programme. The study utilised the descriptive survey design involving both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods and analyses. The sample comprised 125 lecturers from the 13 faculties of the University who had participated in the first three training sessions of the programme. Participants considered the programme to be academically and professionally relevant; and highlighted the impediments to the effective realisation of the objectives of the programme. The implications of these findings for the implementation of similar programmes were discussed.
